The Lagos State Government has raised an alarm over the possibility of the Mopol 20 Barracks in Onigbongbo, Ikeja to collaps following an assessment conducted by the state government which showed the dilapidated state of most especially the old Block 3 structure.
The Lagos State emergency management agency (LASEMA) has since been mandated with the emergency evacuation and controlled explosion of the barracks with the hope of avoiding loss of lives as well as property.
The dilapidated structure is confirmed to be demolished
During a press briefing on Wednesday, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu said that the Lagos State Emergency Response Team that had engaged on the structure inspected it and determined that the structure is unsafe and potentially hazardous to occupants.
It was Oke-Osanyintolu, who said that: it was necessary to evacuate the building and structures and the response plan that contain assessment, evacuation, and controlled demolition phases is effective.
It is important to prevent major incidents which may be caused by a collapse of a building and therefore controlled demolition is necessary.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu the public should remain calm because activities of the suspected cultists are being closely monitored.
‘As we proceed with this early intervention demolition exercise under the watch of the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu led administration, the structure is unsafe hence the risk of other calamities happening,’ he opined.
People have been advised not to contribute to rumours going round on the social media as the Lagos State Government and LASEMA continue giving an efficient and safe handling of the situation.
