Potholes Plague Third Mainland Bridge, Worrying Commuters

by Victor Adetimilehin

The deteriorating state of Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge has raised serious concerns among commuters. Motorists navigating this vital link between Lagos Mainland and Lagos Island are troubled by the presence of extensive potholes that now mark the entire length of the bridge on both sides. This approximately 12-kilometer-long bridge stretches from Oworonshoki on the Mainland to the Adeniji Adele Interchange on Lagos Island. Since its commissioning in 1990, it has undergone various rounds of rehabilitation.

The most recent round of repairs was conducted on April 2, 2023, by the Lagos State Government. Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, a former Commissioner for Transportation in Lagos State, explained that the government addressed identified deteriorated sections. Despite the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency’s jurisdiction over the bridge, the state government intervened due to severe damage and traffic congestion along the University of Lagos axis. During previous rehabilitation efforts, motorists endured significant hardships as traffic was diverted from the bridge to alternative routes, resulting in extended travel times.

However, despite these interventions, the bridge continues to suffer from ongoing degradation. Presently, large potholes of various sizes have emerged along the entire span, particularly between the Obalende and Adekunle ends on both sides. These potholes are unmistakable for commuters traveling from the Mainland to the Island via Ebute Meta, and they are also visible while approaching the bridge from Ebute Meta.

Notably, a civil engineer named Mr. Victor Oyenuga mentioned that he received information regarding imminent repair work on the bridge. He believes that the situation may not be as dire as some portray it, though he admitted to not having visited the area recently.

According to the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, a new round of emergency repairs for the Third Mainland Bridge is in the works due to its deteriorating condition. The Minister disclosed these plans during his inspection of federal road projects and the three bridges connecting Lagos Mainland and Lagos Island in August 2023. He announced that a contractor would be mobilized to perform nighttime repair work on the bridge between midnight and 4 am, aiming to minimize disruption for commuters.

Despite the current state of disrepair, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon as plans for rehabilitation take shape, offering the promise of safer and smoother journeys for the countless commuters who rely on the Third Mainland Bridge. This news underscores the government’s commitment to addressing critical infrastructure concerns and ensuring the safety and convenience of the public.
